When one of his new associates botches an elective operation on a h patient, he realizes the colleague is nothing more than a society abortionist and that he and his new friends are little better. She supports him through thick and thin, encourages him in his work and helps with his research into lung diseases. He also helps the tubercular daughter of an old friend to an unorthodox but effective pneumothorax in a clinic ctiadel by Stillman, an American who does not have an MD.
Since Manson has accused the incompetent surgeon of murder, he is vindictively reported to the General Ccitadel Council for having worked with an American tuberculosis specialist, Richard Stillman, who does not have a medical degree, even though the patient had been successfully treated at his clinic.

I write as an English-trained physician who has spent a career in American academic medicine. Thd, he finds himself doing the very things that caused him such anger in his early practice days. It is difficult to see him turn from this man into a cynic of a man who is obsessed with making more money, even if it means pandering to wealthier patients, giving patients medicine he knows doesn’t work, or encouraging patients to get unnecessary surgeries. View all 10 comments. Essentially, he’s become i he derided earlier in his career; his wife, however, still wants the simple life “one bedroom and a kitchen” would be ok with her. I suppose it was necessary to move the story forward, but I have a hard time finding that such a contrast could take place so quickly.

The venality, incompetence, gross inequality and closed-mindedness of the medical profession of that time caused a sensation when the book was published in I highly recommend this book.
She serves merely as a moral barometer, and as an object to make Manson feel either happy or guilty. Characters are well developed and the multi linear plot easy to follow, bit hard to predict. He slowly begins to see that there is a great deal of money to be made by tending to the rich and pampering them with pills and potions and attention.
Just an all over great read. A patient dies because of a surgeon’s ineptitude, and the incident causes Manson to abandon his practice and return to his principles.
